Back in the late 19th century and early 20th century, it was not uncommon for a table setting to incorporate the use of open salt cellars and spoons. Each would be placed at the individual table setting. The lunch or dinner patron would use the spoon to add salt to their meals.
As the times changed and it became more medically apparent that added salt to the diet was not the way to go, the use of open salts or even regular salt shakers slowly but surely vanished from the dining experience.
Today open salt cellars made by Tiffany in particular are quite collectible and in some cases very valuable as in the tune of hundreds of dollars were troy ounce.
